Hola, yo soy Marina y estoy haciendo un intercambio en el colegio León XIII durante dos meses con Irene, una alumna de 4o de la ESO. Irene estuvo en mi casa en Irlanda por cinco semanas en septiembre.
Hello, I’m Marina and I’m doing an exchange to the Leon XIII school for two months with Irene, a fourth year student. Irene stayed in my house for five weeks in September.
Día 1 – 07/01/2025
Hoy cogí el Ave de Madrid a Málaga por la mañana, llegué a las dos y media. Me recogieron Irene, su hermano Álvaro, y su padre Julio, y nos fuimos a casa a comer con Ana, la madre. Irene y su familia son muy majos, y me han acogido como parte de la familia enseguida. Después de comer, deshice la maleta y llevé a Irene a su entrenamiento. Cuando volvió, cenamos, preparamos las cosas para el día siguiente y nos fuimos a dormir. El horario de comer en España es muy diferente al de Irlanda, en España, la comida más grande se come durante el día, y la merienda a las 5 o 6 de la tarde y una cena mas pequeña a las 8 o 9. Mientras que en Irlanda, se come una comida más pequeña al mediodía, y la comida más grande se come sobre las 5 o 6. Entonces tendré que acostumbrarme durante los proximos meses a la diferencia.
Today I got the train from Madrid to Málaga at 11 and I arrived in Málaga at half 2. Irene, Álvaro (her brother), and Julio (her dad), were waiting for me at the train station and brought me back to their house, then we had lunch when Ana (her mam) got home. Irene and her family are very nice people and have accepted me as if part of their family already. After we ate I unpacked my luggage and then walked Irene to her karate class. When she got back we had dinner, prepared our things for tomorrow, and went to bed. The eating times in Spain are different to the ones in Ireland. In Spain, the largest meal is eaten during the day, with a small snack around 5/6 and a smaller supper at 8 or 9. Whereas in Ireland, a small meal, usually a salad or a sandwich is eaten in the middle of the day, and the large dinner is had around 5 or 6, so I will have to get accustomed over the next couple of months to the eating habits here.
Día 2 – 08/01/2025
Hoy fue el primer día del colegio. Nos levantamos pronto y desayuné una taza de té que me he traído desde Irlanda. Llegamos al cole a las ocho menos diez y conocí a las amigas de Irene que son muy simpáticas. En León XIII los alumnos esperan en el polideportivo por la mañana hasta que les llame su profesor. La profesora que se encarga de los intercambios me vino a buscar y me quedé con ella la primera clase para terminar los papeles. Después fui a la clase de educación física y estuvimos aprendiendo sobre la RCP. Antes del recreo tuvimos biología, y a las 11 salimos al recreo durante media hora. Luego tuvimos atención educativa, historia, y mates. Hay um ambiente muy amable en el colegio, y todos los profesores y los estudiantes son muy majos y acogedores. Los lunes y miércoles , Irene tiene clase de inglés después del colegio, y mientras, yo voy a ayudar en las clases de infantil. Esto cuenta para mis prácticas de mi curso del cole en Irlanda. Antes de ir a infantil fuimos al comedor para comer, y hoy había pasta con tomate. Me gustó mucho estar en infantil, porque a mí me gustan los niños, y estaban muy interesados en mi vida en Irlanda. Además, hoy los Reyes Magos vinieron y dejaron muchos regalos para los niños, entonces estaban todos muy emocionados. Para mí, estar en un colegio mixto es un poco raro porque mi colegio en Irlanda es solo de niñas, y, además, hay ciento cincuenta alumnos en mi curso, comparado con los sesenta de aquí. Es muy diferente, pero me gusta. Hoy conocí a un montón de gente y aprendí mucho sobre como es el cole aquí.
Today was the first day of school. We woke up early, and for breakfast I had a cup of tea that I brought from Ireland. We arrived at school at ten to eight, and I met Irene’s friends, who were very nice and welcoming. At Leon XIII, the students wait in the outdoor PE hall in the morning until their teacher calls them. The teacher in charge of the exchanges came to find me, and I stayed with her during the first class to finish my paperwork. After that, I went to P.E. class, and we were learning about CPR. Before recess, we had biology, and at 11, we went out for a half-hour break. Afterward, we had educational support (kind of like CSPE), history, and maths. There’s a lovely atmosphere in the school and all the teachers and students are really friendly and welcoming. After school, Irene has English classes on Mondays and Wednesdays, and in the meantime, I’ll be helping in the infant classes. In my school year in Ireland, I have work experience every week, so this also counts for that. Before going to the infant classes, we went to the cafeteria for lunch, and today there was pasta with tomato. I really enjoyed being in the infant classes. I like being around kids, and they were very interested in my life in Ireland. Also, today the Three Wise Men had come and left lots of gifts for the children, so they were all very excited. For me, being in a mixed school is a bit strange because my school in Ireland is for girls only, not only that, but there are one hundred and fifty students in my year, compared to the sixty here; it’s very different, but I like it. Today I met a lot of people and learned a lot about how school works here.
Día 4 – 10/01/2025
Hoy era viernes, y fue un día normal en el colegio. Por ahora, mi clase favorita es la de historia, porque estamos aprendiendo sobre la historia de España, y es muy interesante porque nunca lo he estudiado. Los estudiantes aquí hacen muchos trabajos de grupo en todas las classes, como presentaciones y Por la tarde conocí la ciudad de Málaga porque salimos con las amigas de Irene, y fue muy divertido.
Today is Friday, and it was a normal day in school. Right now, my favourite class is History, because we’re learning about Spanish History, and it’s very interesting to me because I’ve never studied it before. In the evening, I got to explore part of the city because we went out with Irene’s friends, and it was very fun.
Día 5 – 11/01/2025
Hoy por la noche abrimos una pata de jamón super rico. A mí me encanta el jamón serrano y no venden jamón bueno en Irlanda. Entonces ha sido muy especial para mí.
Today in the evening we opened a delicious leg of ham. I love serrano ham, and they rarely (if ever) sell it in Ireland, so this was very special for me.
Día 7 – 13/01/2025
Hoy es lunes e Irene tenía clase de inglés, entonces yo fui a infantil después del cole. Estaba en una de las clases de 3o, donde los niños tienen 5 o 6 años, que son muy monos. Les he leído un cuento en inglés y después me han preguntado palabras para que las traduzca al inglés. Aunque solo tienen 5 anos, saben muchas palabras en inglés,
Today is Monday, and Irene has English classes so I went to the Infant classes after school. I was in one of the 3rd year classes, where the kids are 5 or 6 years old, and they’re super cute. I read them a story in English and afterwards they asked me words in so that I could translate them to English.
Día 9 – 15/01/2025
Hoy hemos tenido un taller de RCP en el colegio. Vinieron dos trabajadores del Protección Civil Voluntario de Málaga, y nos enseñaron que hay que hacer en una situación donde se necesita usar RCP. Fue muy interesante y útil.
Today we had a CPR workshop in school. Two workers from the Voluntary Civil Protection Service of Málaga came and showed us what to do in a situation where CPR is needed. It was very interesting and useful.
Día 11 – 17/01/2025
Hoy, viernes, Irene y yo fuimos de compras al Larios (un centro comercial) para comprar un regalo de una amiga de Irene que se llama Paula porque iba a celebrar su cumpleaños al día siguiente. Después fuimos a cenar en VIPS. Pedimos un plato de aperitivos para compartir, que tenía croquetas de jamón (mi favorito), y pasta carbonara, también para compartir. La comida era muy rica, y cuando terminamos volvimos a casa en metro.
Today, Friday, Irene and I went shopping to Larios (a shopping centre) to buy a present for Irene’s friend, Paula, because she was celebrating her birthday the next day. Afterwards, we went for dinner in VIPS. We ordered a plate of mixed starters to share, that came with ham croquetas (my fav), and a plate of pasta carbonara, also to share. The food was delicious, and then we went home on the metro.
Día 13 – 19/01/2025
Hoy Irene y su familia me llevó a un pueblo cerca de Málaga que se llama Mijas. Es un pueblo muy bonito, con edificios blancos, calles estrechas, y muchas flores. Fuimos al Museo Histórico Etnológico que está en una casa antigua y tenía máquinas de hacer aceite de oliva, vino, miel, pan, y más. Después fuimos a un restaurante para comer, y pedimos unas croquetas de rabo de toro, que nunca los había probado, y eran ricas. Luego, fuimos a dar un paseo por el pueblo, viendo las vistas, las tiendas, una iglesia, y un monumento de La Virgen de la Peña.
Today Irene and her family brought me to a nearby town in Málaga called Mijas. It’s a beautiful Spanish village with typical all-white buildings, narrow streets, and lots of flowers. We went to the Histórico Etnológico museum first that was in an old house and had machines to make olive oil, wine, honey, bread, and more. Then we went to a restaurant to have lunch, and we ordered some ox tail croquetas, which I had never tried before, and they were nice. Then we went for a walk around the village, looking at the views, the shops, a Church, and a monument of La Virgen de La Peña.
Día 16 – 22/01/2025
Hoy tuvimos una excursión al Museo Pompidou en Muelle Uno. Fuimos todo el curso de 4o de la ESO, y otro estudiante erasmus que ha venido de Alemania con su profesor. Hicimos un tour del museo en dos grupos, viendo todas las diferentes salas de arte. Es un museo de arte contemporáneo entonces tenía muchas piezas originales. Cuando terminamos, tuvimos cuarenta minutos de tiempo libre antes de dar un museo por la zona para ver algunas murales en unos edificios. Los profesores nos hablaron sobre cada mural, dando información para ayudar a los alumnos que estudian arte y dibujo técnico.
Today we went on a trip to the Pompidou Museum in Muelle Uno. They whole of 4th year went, and another Erasmus student from Germany came with her teacher as well. We did a tour of the museum in two groups, seeing all the different exhibitions. It’s a contemporary art museum, and so it had lots of original pieces. When we finished the tour, we were given forty minutes of free time before going on a walk around the area to see the murals on some of the buildings. The teachers spoke on each mural, giving us information and tips that would help the students that study art and technical drawing.
Día 19 – 25/01/2025
¡Hoy es mi cumpleaños! Como sorpresa, Irene y su familia me han llevado de excursión a Granada. Nos levantamos pronto y empezamos el viaje sin saber dónde íbamos (menos los padres). Paramos a desayunar un poco antes de Granada, y pedimos bocatas de jamón serrano y café. Fuimos al Parque De Ciencias y pasamos el día ahí. A mí me encantan las ciencias y el parque es super interesante, me gustó mucho. Tenía muchas salas con diferentes ramas de ciencias y es muy interactiva, entonces es entretenida para todos. Después hicimos un poco de turismo por el centro de Granada que es muy bonito y vimos a La Alhambra por fuera.
Today is my birthday! As a surprise, Irene and her family brought me to Granada. We got up early and started the journey without knowing where we were going (except the parents). We stopped for breakfast and ordered toasted bread with serrano ham (a very typical food in Spain), and coffee. Then we went to the Science Park in Granada and spent the day there. I love science and the park is incredibly interesting, I liked it a lot. It has lots of exhibitions of different areas of science and it is very interactive, so it’s really entertaining for everybody. Afterwards we did a bit of tourism around Granada city centre, which is very beautiful, and we saw the outside of the Alhambra (a castle).
Día 24 – 30/01/2025
Hoy han llegado los jerséis de Erasmus al colegio. Irene se pidió uno y me dejaron pedirme uno también. Tiene la bandera de España en la manga porque mi intercambio ha sido a España, y pone mi nombre por detrás, con los nombres de otros estudiantes de Erasmus. Luego, mi clase tenía un examen de inglés, que yo no lo tenía que hacer, entonces fui a la otra clase de 4o con unas amigas de Irene. Tenían lengua y estaban leyendo. Todos los días tienen que dedicar media hora de lectura en cada asignatura, y en lengua están leyendo Espejos Venecianos. Por la tarde, Irene y yo fuimos a una audición de piano, donde iba a tocar una amiga de ella, Miriam. Lo hizo muy bien y nos lo pasamos genial.
Today the Erasmus jumpers arrived at the school. Irene ordered one for herself and they let me order one as well. It has the Spanish flag on the sleeve, because my exchange is to Spain, and it has my name on the back, with the names of other Erasmus students. Later, my class had an English test, so I went to the other 4th year class with some of Irene’s friends. They had language class, and they were reading. Every day the students have to dedicate half an hour of class to reading in each subject, and in language they are reading Espejos Venecianos (Venecian mirrors). In the evening, Irene and I went to a piano show, where one of her friends, Miriam, was playing the piano. She played very well and we had a great time.
Día 25 – 31/01/2025
Hoy celebramos el día de la paz en el colegio. Todos teníamos que escribir una frase sobre la paz en un lazo y después atarlo en una valla en el cole. Sobre las diez, todos los alumnos (de bachillerato, secundaria, primaria, e infantil) salimos al patio donde los de 1o y 2o de la ESO nos han tocado una canción en la flauta. Después un alumno de cada clase ha leído su lazo a todo el cole, y un representante de secundaria, bachillerato, etc. leyó un discurso sobre la paz. En educación física, hemos estado preparando unos juegos típicos de Andalucía, y hoy los jugamos con una de las clases de 3o de primaria, y era muy divertido. Mi grupo les ha enseñado como jugar al poli ladro. Por la tarde cogí el tren a Madrid porque voy a pasar este fin de semana con mi familia.
Today we celebrated the International Day of Peace in school. We all had to write a sentence about peace onto a ribbon and then tie it onto a fence in the school yard. Around ten o’clock, the whole school (secondary, primary, and infants) went out to the yard where 1st and 2nd year students played a song on the flute. Afterwards one student from each class read their ribbon to the whole school, and one representative from secondary, primary, etc, read a speech about peace. In PE, we’ve been preparing some typical games from Andalucía, and today we played them with one of the 3rd primary classes, and it was very fun. My group showed then how to play a version of cops and robbers. Later, in the evening, I took the train to Madrid as I was going to spend the weekend with my family that lives there.
